8 Fun Typing Activities for Kids
The secret to typing practice that sticks? Make it playful. Here are eight simple, mostly-free activities to keep kids engaged — a mix of on-screen and away-from-the-keyboard ideas.
- Play a typing game. A friendly game like Typing Superstar turns practice into an adventure, with stars and gentle finger guidance.
- Type your name. Kids love typing their own name, then family names, pets and favourite foods.
- Keyboard scavenger hunt. Call out a letter and have them find and press it as fast as they can.
- Silly sentence copy. Write a goofy sentence on paper ("the purple cow can dance") and have them type it.
- Alphabet race. Type the alphabet a–z, then try to beat their own time tomorrow.
- Home-row warm-up. Practise just the home row keys — f, j, then d, k — like a little finger workout.
- Story starter. Give them a first line and let them type one more sentence to continue the story.
- Label the room. Type the names of objects they can see — "chair," "lamp," "window."
Tips to keep it fun
Keep sessions short (5–10 minutes), praise effort over speed, and let them choose the activity when you can. For more, see how to teach a child to type.
