Typing Games for Kindergarten (Ages 4–6)
Kindergarten is the perfect time for gentle first steps at the keyboard — not formal touch typing, but playful, confidence-building exploration. Here's what works for the youngest learners.
What's age-appropriate at kindergarten
- Letter recognition first. Finding and pressing the right letter is the main goal — perfect for practising the alphabet.
- Very short sessions. Just 3–5 minutes keeps it fun and pressure-free.
- Big, clear letters and no timers. Young children do best without a clock ticking.
- One key at a time. Highlighting the next key to press helps little ones know exactly what to do.
How to start gently
Begin by helping your child find single letters — their name is a wonderful first word. As they grow comfortable, you can gently introduce where fingers rest (the home row keys). There's no rush: at this age, enjoyment and confidence matter far more than speed or perfect technique. For a fuller picture, see what age a child should learn to type.
A game made for little learners
Typing Superstar is well suited to kindergarten: it highlights the next key with a glow, shows which finger to use, and never punishes mistakes — Sparky the Star just gently points to the right key and celebrates every success with stars.
